The pleasure of answering "it depends"

What I am doing these days? – It Depends!

The past two years I have been asked that question more frequently, the one that pops up at family gatherings, networking events, or when you bump into an old colleague or friend: "What do you do these days?"

For me, the answer lately has been kind of liberating as I can finally use the phrase "It depends" in its right sense! And maybe somehow, it is not by coincidence this is my current "way of working". I am an explorer and I love to learn new things‍. (But that doesn’t mean that I never doubt my path..).

Some things found in my calendar recently:

*Market research and preparations for a sales training session.

*Going back to the roots and re-learning about traditional pharmacy work (I am unreasonable enthusiastic about this comeback😁).

*Attending a “networking event” & reconnecting with inspiring minds that opened new doors for me.

*Stating a project related to sustainability in healthcare.

*Putting on my reading glasses👓 (as I always seem to be registered for some kind of course). Currently focus is on “fundamentals of AI”, alongside studies on hormonal health and nutrition.

*Some time for self-reflection; swinging between self-confidence and self-doubt. The normal roller coaster of independence-life I guess🤷‍♀️.

*A nice, long bike ride in the sun (that always seems to clear my mind)‍.

*A trip to “GoCO” in Gothenburg. An “innovation city” different to my normal innovation scene in Lund and Malmö. Love being in communities that breathes innovation and inspiration.

*And among all these activities, also a (crazy?) consideration of joining the voluntary Swedish military service; why not🤪?

It's quite a mix I know, but I recently read an article that made me feel a bit more “normal”. Maybe even ahead of the curve?

The article was predicting the rise of "portfolio careers" in the future. The idea is that we'll increasingly have multiple roles and skill sets, rather than a single traditional career.

And I am thinking, maybe, as AI increasingly will take over more and more routine jobs, this might not just be a trend, but a necessity?

When I am on a high, standing on the mountain of hubris, I am thinking that maybe “flexibility and adaptability” are no longer common strengths of mine (and many other individual's), but actually super-powers🦹? Being able to switch between different roles and projects, constantly curious and willing to learn new things?

But I have to admit that there are also times when I think that this “varied” portfolio career might just be "too varied"🤔 ? When in self doubt I am trying to justify my portfolio career with the following :

  • Great diversity: I get to explore/use all my different interests and skills.
  • Lifelong learning: Helps me stay curious and open
  • Staying flexible: Makes me more resistant to changes
  • Networking is nice: People are (most of the time) generous and nice..
  • Optimized dosage for my passions: I can fuel my passions in descent dose. No     over-dosing here =)!

I believe in a life in motion (physically and mentally) and maybe this current portfolio career is a reflection of this. I sincerely don’t think you have to go to the extreme to find your own portfolio career. Maybe it is just about finding some variation in the position you are currently holding?

Or exploring a new field through a course or temporary assignment? Or maybe working from a different office or location for a while?

Here's to a future where we all find our own version of "it depends," and live that “vivante-life” we want to live!

See you in the adventure!
